In 1968, Co-founders of Mattel, Elliot and Ruth Handler, got the idea of diecast toy cars by watching their grandchildren play with toy cars. They hired on a team of designers that included Harry Bradley, from General Motors, to help with the design process of Hot Wheels. When Elliot Handler first saw Bradley's classic Southern California hot rod in the parking lot he said, "Man, those are some hot wheels". That is how the Hot Wheels brand name was born, combining the hot-rod theme with the car's new suspension and wheel design.

Hot Wheel cars were designed to run on an orange plastic track that could be looped and connected together. The cars were immediately popular in both the United States and the United Kingdom and Hot Wheels were voted the UK Toy of the Year in 1969. According to Mattel, some 15 million people are collecting the cars in the 21st century, with the average collector owning more than 41 Hot Wheels cars. Somewhere in the world two Hot Wheels cars are sold every second.

As with other collectible toys, Hot Wheels are popular with adults as well as children. Mattel has responded to this in recent years by reproducing the early cars that people remember from their childhood. Most of us men all had Hot Wheels toy cars when we were young and must of us left them littered across our bedroom floor despite the warnings of our mothers. I know there were more than a few times that my mother would come into my room and tell me to clean up those cars or else she was going to throw them out. Holding true to her promise, I guess she did or at least I thought she did. I do not remember the exact date, but one day those diecast cars were gone, I pitched a fit and was told to forget about them.

Many years had passed and last Mothers day we were sitting around the dinner table and i thought to ask dear old mom about her throwing away my Hot Wheels. I had not told her that over the past years that collecting them had become a hobby of mine as it just never came up in conversation. When I asked the direct question of weather she really threw them out or not, she thought for a moment and said, she thought she put them in a box and stored them in the addic. I could not wait for dinner to finish and rushed up the attic stairs to begin plundering. It took me fours and one re-organized attic, but I found a big box full of these vintage and now rare Hot Wheels. I thanked mom and apologized for not keeping them cleaned up off of the floor.

The box was full of some highly valuable cars and childhood memories and I looked up all of them in my Hot wheels price guide and could not believe the values. several are worth well over a couple of hundred dollars.

So this Mother's day, apologize to mom for never cleaning up the cars off of your bedroom floor and ask her if by chance she saved those diecast cars she said she threw out. You might just be surprised by her answer.

Hot Wheels Mystery Cars

With the Hot Wheels Mystery Car Series every car is a surprise. Each car in the car Mystery Series is packaged in a blacked-out blister pack, so you’ll have no idea what’s inside without opening it up. The series has 24 models, none of which are in the other Hot Wheels series. The cars all have different levels of production. The packaging has codes printed on the back of every package. These codes identify the car inside the pack and the numbers are released on the web later in the year so you don’t have to open the package—if you do not want to.

Since 2007 the Mystery cars series has been popular and Mattel has continued to include this Series in its yearly basic cars run series in 2008 and 2009. The 2009 cars are below:

Collecting is a hobby shared by millions across the United States. People sometimes collect the bizarre and obscure like duct tape or hubcaps. Others collect extremely popular items like Coca Cola products and baseball cards. Right up there with the top of the list are miniature die cast cars. For many, the first edition Hot Wheels series of cars are the equivalent of the rookie card to a baseball card collector.

Whenever Hot Wheels used to release a new vehicle in their lineup, it was referred in the First Edition Hot Wheels series. Later, in 2007, Mattel decided to drop the title and move it to, simply, New Model. Many people enjoy collecting the First Editions of vehicles as it brings a sense of freshness to their collection. Many collectors view the cars currently in open stock as ordinary. The title that they are bestowed with adds value and a sense of originality to their collection.

Because of the built in limited quantity that comes with a car in the First Edition Hot Wheels series, there is a very real sense of limited production. They can obviously only be acquired the very first year of production to earn the title and with that comes its collectability. Hot Wheels Treasure Hunts

Hot Wheels Treasure Hunts were a line that Mattel brought to market in 1995. The concept behind it was that 12 cars would be released every year, one car per month, during a very limited production run. In the first year of production, only 10,000 units were produced globally. True to its name, they became sought after at a remarkable rate. They were in such high demand, in fact, that Mattel made the executive decision to increase production for the years 1996 and 1997 to 25,000 units distributed globally. In 1998, Mattel stopped publicly releasing production numbers on the Hot Wheels Treasure Hunt line so there’s no data to support how many were produced from 1998 on.

Hot Wheels Treasure Hunts, or T-Hunts as they were also known, are easily identifiable by their packaging. A green bar flanks the right side with the words “Treasure Hunts” in it and a picture of a treasure chest. These cars were made special using flashy paint schemes and designs as well as having special rubber wheels that weren’t available in the normal Hot Wheels line. Even though they sold at normal retail price, even from their inception, they fetched a premium on the internet and special collector’s stores.

Hot Wheels Treasure Hunts were not only available as individual cars at stores but they were sold in a special collector’s set of all 12 through Mattel’s Redline Club and JC Penney. These are even rarer than the actual T-Hunt cars are themselves and have a production range of 2,000 to 6,000 units. Since it came in a unique bundled package featuring all 12 cars, the value of this set is considered to be even higher than having the complete collection of 12 for a specific year loosely.

In 2007, change came about the Hot Wheels Treasure Hunts line once again. Mattel had decided that they would release their regular 12 car lineup for the T-Hunt line but they wouldn’t stop there. They were also creating 12 Super Treasure Hunts. The Super Treasure Hunts line was also 12 cars but it brought even more features with it and a rarity that had gotten away from the original Hot Wheels Treasure Hunts concept. The Super T-Hunts are usually finished in the new recreated Spectraflame paint scheme, a throwback to the original Hot Wheels of the 60’s. They also include more authentic wheels known as real riders that were a key component of the Treasure Hunts line since its original inception in ’95.

Redline Hot Wheels

Redline Hot Wheels are the names that the original Hot Wheels cars have become known as. They’ve earned this distinguishing title due to the fact that when production of the Hot Wheels line began in 1968, one of the unique features that set them apart from their competition were Redline wheels. Other unique characteristics that these originals brought to market were Spectraflame paint jobs and a suspension that allowed them to race around Hot Wheels tracks.

Redline Hot Wheels featured an etched red line into the side of the wheels on the cars and that’s where the nickname came from. This was an extremely popular look as it was a nod to the muscle cars of the same era, drawing fans from the boys and boys at heart. Even adults found Hot Wheels fun since they could now buy the muscle cars parked in their garages and driveways in miniature form. The tires themselves were often slicker, too, so the cars could perform well on Mattel’s Hot Wheels race tracks.

A special plastic was used in the tires as well as the race tracks to make a low friction surface perfect for gaining the maximum amount of speed out of these little Redline Hot Wheels cars. This plastic, known as Delrin, was cheap and durable so it created a perfect compound to work with in toy manufacturing. At first, the Delrin plastic was used to create a bushing behind the tire between the axles to eliminate as much friction as possible. As a result, the cars could attain scale speeds of up to 200 miles per hour on the tracks. In 1970, these bushings became phased out and were replaced with a flat black backing and an outer cap.

Eventually, in 1977, the Redline Hot Wheels were discontinued. The move helped to reduce production costs but was as much a move due to design as it was one for cost reasons. By 1977, designers felt that the redline wheels so popularly displayed on the rims of muscle cars everywhere were no longer a current design element. As much as it marked to move the end of an era for Hot Wheels cars, it marked the end of an era for their real counterparts. Today, Redline Hot Wheels are still some of the most sought after cars by collectors. Originals from 1968 can fetch astronomical sums of money that most of us can’t even fathom.
